With Et Lux, the German composer has created a modern requiem – a musical quest for eternity. For Rihm, the focus is on “et lux perpetua luceat …/ and let perpetual light shine …”. In circling reflection, the consolatory and yet deeply disturbing layers of these words can be felt. He links the music of the Middle Ages with the present – from vocal polyphony of the Renaissance to the string quartets of classical to modern music – and unveils an hour of wondrous beauty of sound.
