PERGOLESI Stabat Mater
La Divina Armonia
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater is one of the best known and most passionate musical settings of the medieval text devoted to the mother of Christ in her grief at the crucifixion of her son. He wrote it at the age of 26, shortly before his early death. The simple natural language and the humanness of Mary are communicated with an emotionality that is both impressive and disturbing. J. S. Bach held the work in high esteem; he performed a German version on the basis of Psalm 51. The Italian ensemble La Divina Armonia, whose musical director is Lorenzo Ghielmi, long-serving cembalist with Il Giardino Armonico, will perform Pergolesi in combination with Passion music written by his friend Francesco Feo.
