In his debut as director, Rahul Jain portrays the exhausting daily lives of the workers in one of the countless textile factories in Gujarat (India). Adults and children work for a pittance under inhumane conditions in gruelling 12-hour shifts. The rhythm of work is set by machines that never stand still. With the help of unforgettable images of great beauty, the camera takes the viewer on a journey to this place of dehumanisation, where humans and machines seem to merge into one. Jain lets the images work on us almost entirely without commentary; just a few selected interviews round off the documentary.
A compelling story of inequality and oppression, humans and machines.
