Cantori Gregoriani Milano
Zelebrant: Prof. Dr. Dominik Markl SJ

Whoever has sensed the feeling of emptiness and loss with which the priests begin the service on Good Friday, lying on the floor of a church stripped of all ornamentation, will have an inkling of what “despite” can mean in our lives. The “nevertheless” of the absurd is clearly formulated in Camus. On Good Friday, something is celebrated and sung about in Christian churches that the average person hardly ever even wants to think about, namely the powerlessness of almighty Death. The death of God on the cross, the agonising death of the Son of Man is precisely narrated, solemnly sung in wonderful harmony in the first, centuries-old Latin chant of the Church: All salvation for the world derives from Him – from the Cross, the place of the cruelest end. Again and again we sing O crux, ave – Hail to the Cross – and in a long lament on his suffering Christ himself asks Popule meus, quid feci tibi? Aut in quo contristavite? Responde mihi. / My people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you! Answer me.
