Destination FCKD (2024) Hungry Sharks
Valentin Alfery
In their new piece, the members of the Hungry Sharks urban dance company operate between reality and fiction. Is the world merely a simulation run on a supercomputer? Are we all just characters in a huge computer game? A thought experiment that is also reflected in the phenomenon of NPCing, i.e. the non-playable characters that serve as extras in computer games, performing the same repetitive actions, movements and dialogues, all reduced to a minimum, in predefined loops. More and more people identify with these background figures, imitating their language and movements on platforms like TikTok. Is it witty or simply an expression of hopelessness? In Destination FCKD, the performers give these background characters a voice of their own.
Hungry Sharks was founded in 2011 by Valentin Alfery (choreographer) and Dušana Baltić (photographer/creative producer). In varying formats, locations and constellations, pieces are regularly created for both the stage and site-specific spaces. A main focus is on critical exploration of social topics.
