Ramasan has a lot of responsibility for an 11-year-old. Following the death of his father, he is now considered the man of the house in traditional Chechen society and as such must look after his mother and two younger sisters. His world is centred on Macondo, a rough refugee settlement on the outskirts of Vienna. Ramasan speaks German much better than his mother Aminat, and he often translates for her in her dealings with the authorities. Aminat is dependent on him as she is still coping with the loss of her husband and flight from Chechnya and is struggling to make ends meet as a single mother and foreigner in an alien society. Ramasan’s confined world is disrupted when Isa, his father’s war buddy, arrives on the scene and pays the family a visit.
