Film: Visages Villages Agnès Varda, JR
The iconic 90-year-old film director Agnès Varda and the 33-year-old street artist JR set out with their unique photomobile to discover and depict the people of France and their narratives in larger-than-life portraits painted on facades, trains and shipping containers. Their art focuses on people from Provence to Normandy: the postman, the factory worker and the last resident on a street in a former mining community. Landscapes are transformed into stages, faces tell forgotten stories, and looks become encounters with human warmth and humour.
Nouvelle vague legend Agnès Varda and photographer JR not only share a passion for images but also a subtle feeling for people and the poetry of the moment. Visages Villages is a cinematic stroke of luck; it captures the touching encounters of the journey with a rare lightness – as well as the unlikely and tender friendship that develops between the two artists. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Documentary category in 2018.
