A still life of a village in the Protestant north of Germany in 1913/14, shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. It is the story of a village and its school and church choirs run by the village teacher, the children and young singers in the choirs and their families – a cross-section of society: the landowner, priest, estate manager, midwife, doctor, farmers. Life in the village is the product of faith, work and feudal structures. But a series of mysterious accidents throws everything off balance. As time passes, the events take on the character of ritual punishments.
