Lazzaro felice is the story of a lesser saint, who performs no miracles, who has no special abilities, no magical powers, a story without special effects. A saint who lives in this world and thinks no evil of anyone, who always believes in his fellow human beings. A story about the possibility of goodness, which people have always ignored but which constantly reappears to question them. Like something that might have been but that we’ve never ever wanted. Lazzaro felice is a political manifesto, a fairytale about the history of Italy over the last fifty years, a song. Alice Rohrwacher

A few dozen peasants and farm labourers are being exploited in a remote place under the rule of the Marchesa. They are unaware of the fact that their enslavement has long been illegal. Nor is it clear exactly when and where they have to perform their labour. Happy Lazzaro is one of them. One day, he might possibly be resurrected like his Biblical namesake and find himself in a different time, one employing other means of exploitation. His story is a fairytale or a myth, between heaven and earth, between magic and realism.
