Film with live synchronisation and music specially composed or arranged by Markus Kraler and Andreas Schett. Paul Czinner made the silent film Fräulein Else based on Arthur Schnitzler’s novella in 1929, an important year in the history of film (including the making of An Andalusian Dog, Man with a Movie Camera and Woman in the Moon). The cabaret duo Maschek and the East Tyrolean Musicbanda Franui present a reinterpretation of Else’s story, who is sold to an art dealer friend by her father, a Viennese lawyer with a penchant for speculating on the stock market. Apart from stories based on the original, there are numerous freely invented sub-narratives and meta-narratives about Fräulein Else and the Thalhof family that reach into the present. This is accompanied by music with a preference for the in-between: On the one hand, it is based on motifs that were probably familiar to Schnitzler and most of the actors in the film, and on the other hand, in Franui’s interpretation, these musical cells can change sides and times at lightning speed and underpin the world invented by Maschek.
