Schatten (Eurydike sagt) by Elfriede Jelinek
in a production by Sabine Mitterecker
Orpheus and Eurydice, the epitome of a pair of lovers: she killed by a snake bite and now in the realm of shadows and he, the all enchanting singer following her to bring her back. But what if Eurydice does not want to go back? What if she rejects the female identity models offered, which all derive from the desires of another person, and lays them aside like last season’s clothes? The male rescue phantasies then lose their attraction and the shades of Hades their horrors. What remains is the pleasure of no longer being an object for viewing. In SCHATTEN (Eurydike sagt) [Shadow (Eurydice Speaks)], Elfriede Jelinek plays with the possibility of an impossible speaking position in which the object of desire arrives at language with great relish herself.
